The delegation of Georgetown University’s International Initiative in the Field of Criminal Justice visited the Research Center for Forensic Expertise in the Field of Information Technologies and Intellectual Property of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine.

Experts from the International Initiative in the Field of Criminal Justice provide support to the Interagency Working Group of the Office of the Prosecutor General, in particular on issues of expert support for justice.

The key issue of the meeting with the Center’s management and experts was the problem of increasing the effectiveness of cooperation between forensic experts and specialists of the Interagency Working Group on issues related to the investigation of crimes committed as a result of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.

Authorized Anti-Corruption Officer of the Research Center for Forensic Expertise in the Field of Information Technologies and Intellectual Property of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, Volodymyr Kuznetsov, participated in the International Advanced Training Course “Professional Development of Experts in Forensic-Criminal Expertise in the Field of Combating Corruption” in Tokyo from December 1 to 13. The event was held with the support of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), a governmental organization under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

The program of the visit to Japan included training on combating corruption through strengthening the institutional capacity of forensic expertise. The event was intended for investigators and employees of the Ministry of Justice and anti-corruption organizations with the aim of familiarizing them with Japanese practices in conducting criminal investigations in the field of combating corruption.

Participants attended a series of thematic lectures where they learned about best practices in investigating corruption crimes. The lecturers included officials from Japanese investigative bodies, prosecutors, lawyers, experts, and scholars. As part of the program, practical seminars were held where algorithms for interaction between experts, investigators, and prosecutors during the investigation of complex corruption cases were practiced.

The acquired experience will be implemented in the work of the Research Center for Forensic Expertise in the Field of Information Technologies and Intellectual Property of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine.

The Research Center for Forensic Expertise in the Field of Information Technologies and Intellectual Property is strengthening its capabilities in conducting explosive technical forensic examinations.

The Research Center for Forensic Expertise in the Field of Information Technologies and Intellectual Property of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the California-based non-profit organization Bomb Techs Without Borders.

Bomb Techs Without Borders cooperates with explosive ordnance disposal units of Ukraine’s Security and Defense Forces. Its instructors provide training and technical consultations on the identification of weapons, analysis of the consequences of explosive devices, mines, chemical substances, ammunition, and new mining techniques used by the Russian army.

The memorandum was signed by the Director of the Center, Mykhailo Mozhaiev, and the Head of Bomb Techs Without Borders in Ukraine, Anthony Salvo.

“Cooperation with Bomb Techs Without Borders will significantly enhance our capabilities in conducting explosive technical examinations,” noted the Director of the Research Center for Forensic Expertise in the Field of IT and IP, Mykhailo Mozhaiev.

According to him, the development of the enemy’s military equipment requires expert institutions to constantly update their methods, improve the regulatory and methodological framework, and develop algorithms for expert actions:

“The databases we will receive from our American partners will significantly increase the level of substantiation of conclusions regarding the identification of ammunition remnants.”

The Research Center for Forensic Expertise in the Field of Information Technologies took part in the Information Day in Kharkiv of the Masaryk University (Brno, Czech Republic) project “Research Infrastructures for the Future of Ukraine”.

The RIFF project was created on the basis of the European Union’s EURIZON research project with the aim of developing an effective roadmap for the development of research infrastructure in Ukraine. The project contributes to the modernization of the research and innovation system, in particular by offering a modern approach to their management. Particular attention is paid to the recovery and improvement of research institutions in Ukraine in accordance with the highest European Union standards.
